Because of its location, RAF Biggin Hill was one of the most involved fighter bases during the Battle of Britain. Home to No. 72, 92, and 66 Squadrons, 11 Group was augmented by No. 610 Squadron in July 1940 two days before the “official” Battle start date. Carrying the code “DW,” The County of Chester squadron flew Spitfire Mk 1A’s and counted among their ranks Sgt Ronald “Ronnie” Hamlyn.
On 24 August, Sgt Hamlyn flew three sorties during which he claimed a Ju 88 and four Bf 109’s becoming the RAF’s first “Ace in a day.” He finished the war with 11 victories.
Hamlyn’s aircraft throughout the Battle of Britain was R6891, a Mk 1A Spitfire which was the standard Spitfire of the day. Equipped with eight Browning 7.7 mm machine guns, the Mk 1A’s were all also revised from the original Mk 1 with Rotol 3-blade constant speed propellers and the first version of the “Malcolm Hood ” canopy with a curved top edge providing more room.
