The Green Demons were formed during WWII in the ETO flying escort duty with P-51B's and transitioned to ground attack with P-47's later in the war. The squadron deployed for the Korean and Vietnam conflicts before settling for 20 years in at Myrtle Beach AFB with A-7's and A-10's. They claim in the unit history James Howard’s famous “Ding Hao!” Mustang in which he earned the Medal of Honor.

After standing down during the post Gulf War draw down, the 356th reactivated flying F-35A's at Eielson AFB in Alaska. 18-5367 is shown in a "Day 1" low RCS Air-to-Air configuration with 4 x AIM-120 missiles in her internal weapons bays.
