The Salty Dogs of Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23 are the US Navy’s premier flight test squadron. Based at NAS Patuxent River, the fly all current fixed and rotary wing aircraft operating by the Navy and Marines.
F-35B-05 has spent her career with the Salty Dogs working on the Lightning II’s flight envelope, systems evaluations, and weapons testing. She is shown here with high speed index markings on her fuselage and high visibility orange munitions to do drop testing for the GBU-12 loaded on station 2. The AIM-9X and GBU-31 are captive carry and present to validate the LGB’s separation characteristics in the presence of those stores.
