After retiring their F-4D’s, Michigan’s Selfridge Air Nation Guard converted to ADF modified F-16A’s to continue their mission. The 171 Fighter Interceptor Squadron, aka the Michigan Six Pack, continued to provided Air Defense Alert from Selfridge and while deployed both to other CONUS locations as well as overseas locations. They additionally performed counter drug operations missions.

For the Air Defense mission, the USAF first modified the F-16A-15-GD’s with the OCU upgrade performed on NATO F-16’s but also added a powerful spotlight in the nose, long range radios – necessitating the telltale blisters on the base of the vertical tail, an AN/APX-109 Airborne IFF Interrogator with the “Bird Slicers: above the nose and below the intake, and a modified APG-66 radar to support AIM-7 and AIM-120 missiles.

81-690 was assigned to pilot Albert “Bullet” Smith and her Dedicated Crew Chief was Tom Tucker. She is show with a standard load out of 2 x AIM-7F’s, 2 x AIM-9M’s, a full gun, Chaff and Flares, and a 300 Gallon centerline fuel tank.
