Formed just before the onset of US participation in WW2, the 523rd TFS Crusaders have flown bombers and fighters in every US conflict since until their inactivation in 2007. They were long time operators of the F-111D prior to F-16 conversion foloowing the former’s withdrawl from operation serivce in 1995.

The squadron flagship is shown ready for a surface attack mission with a pair of MK 84 GP 2,000 lbs bombs, her internal cannon and four AIM-9M IR missiles for self-escort, an AN/ALQ-131 “deep” ECM countermeasures pod and internal chaff and flares for sefl protection, and a pair of 370 gallon external wing tanks to get there and back.
