Vought Aeroplanes F4U Corsair Fine Art Aircraft Prints

The Corsair’s unusual wing leading edge intakes create a unique whistle at high speeds… because that’s the first noise when the plane approaches, the Imperial Japanese force’s nickname for the F4U was “Whistling Death.”

The Corsair was designed as a Fighter-Bomber for the US Navy and entered the war in late 1944. Early carrier “teething problems” lead the USN to transfer the Corsairs to the Marines for use as a land-based plane… where it forged a legacy as perhaps to most potent Fighter-Bombers in the Pacific Theater of Operations… flying just under 45% of all fighter sorties and dropping 70% of all Fighter delivered bombs.
